Birecik, Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi'nin Orta Fırat bölümünde Şanlıurfa iline bağlı 47.034 nüfuslu bir ilçe merkezidir. Fırat ırmağının eskiden sadece doğu kıyısındayken son yıllarda her iki kıyısı üzerinde, deniz seviyesinden 450 metre yükseklikte kurulmuştur.
Birecik Şanlıurfa'ya 83, Gaziantep'e 63 km uzaklıktadır. Evler, ırmak boyundaki dar bir düzlükte ve bunun gerisinde yükselen dik bir yamaç üzerine yayılır. Bu yamaç üzerinde bir de kalesi vardır. Fırat, Birecik’in bulunduğu noktadan itibaren aşağıya doğru ufak çapta nehir nakliyatına elverişlidir. Bu sebeple, Birecik eskiden beri kara ve nehir ulaşımı arasında bir aktarma yeri olarak önem kazanmıştır. Daha sonraki devirlerde İstanbul-Bağdat demiryolunu Birecik’ten değil de biraz güneyden geçmesi ve kervan ticaretinin eski önemini kaybetmesiyle kasaba gerilemeye başladı. İnşası 1951'de başlayıp 1956'da sona eren Birecik Köprüsünün yapılması kasabanın önemini yeniden artırdı.
Tarihi MÖ 2000 yılına kadar dayanır. Hitit, Asur, Pers, Makedon, Bizans ve Arap egemenliğinin izlerini taşıyan şehir, Selçuklular'dan itibaren Türkler'in egemenliğine girmiştir. Adını Birtho'dan aldığı sanılmaktadır. Birtho Asurilerin konuştuğu kadim Arami dilinde tepe demektir. Birecik'in en eski yapısı olup 12 burcundan sadece biri ayakta kalan kalenin kayalık bir tepenin üstünde kurulu olması bu olasılığı güçlendirmektedir. İlçe halkı tahıl ve baklagiller tarımıyla meşgul olur. Fıstık yetiştirme de ilçenin ekonomik hayatında çok önemli bir yer tutar.
Birecik Köprüsü, Birecik ilçesinde Fırat ırmağı üzerindedir. Geçmişte Şanlıurfa-Gaziantep karayolu, Birecik’te kesintiye uğruyor, ırmak bu noktada kayık ve sallarla geçildikten sonra yolculuğa devam ediliyordu. 1951 yılı ortalarında burada bir köprünün yapımına başlandı. 1956 yılı başlarında biten Birecik Köprüsü 720 m uzunluğunda ve 10 m genişlediğindedir. Yolun her iki tarafında yayaların geçmesi için birer metrelik kesimler ayrılmıştır. Birecik tarafında 55’er metre açıklıkta 5 kemer, Gaziantep tarafında ise 26'şar metre açıklıkta 14 bölümü vardır.
Kelaynak kuşlarıyla ünlü, Fırat nehrinin çekiciliği ile doğal ve tarihi eserleriyle göze hoş gelen bir ilçedir. Birecik köprüsü Türkiye'nin ikinci uzun ırmak köprüsüdür. Birecik kuzeyinde Birecik Barajı güneyinde ise, Karkamış Barajı arasında göl havzasında kalmaktadır. İlçe ekonomisi genelde Antep fıstığı üreticiliği üzerine kuruludur.Also unhealthy for emergency
